The work of Marianne Mitchell captures the essence of visual and emotional experiences and creates a sense of place familiar to the viewer in its abstract espression. This vision is realized through the balance of architectural and organic forms, light and dark values, transparent and opaque color, and active and passive surfaces. Each piece reaches a different resolution of balance while revealing the poetic essence around us and within us.

The daughter of architects, Marianne Mitchell grew up in the Andorra Natural Area just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her parents Ehrman B. Mitchell and Hermine S. Mitchell designed and built the house where she spent her childhood, and now resides in with architect husband Bruce Schmit and daughter Kirin along with their three cats. The structure of the house, open floor plan, and glass facades which frame the outdoor landscape, have been influential in shaping Marianne’s artistic vision of creating a sense of place through the balance of architectural and organic form.

A graduate of Germantown Friends School, Marianne received her BFA from Washington University, doing post graduate work in Japan, China, and at the Vermont Studio Center. Marianne is the recipient of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation Fellowship in Painting, and has exhibited in New York and California. She is currently represented by Zenith Gallery in Washington DC, and the Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia. Her work hangs in numerous private and public collections locally, nationally, and internationally. Marianne’s studio is just outside of Philadelphia in the Norristown Arts Building.

"My paintings are poetic conversations about the tension in opposition, and the resolution in balance. Evolving through color, texture, shape and emotion, the paintings evoke metaphor and memory resonating
with the soul." - Marianne Mitchell
