Born in Shiga, Japan, in 1964, Toru Sugita has been featured in thirteen publications, articles and interviews, four public lectures, and exhibits in eleven countries. He has won nine prestigious awards and his work is in the permanent collections of the Achenbach Foundation of Graphic Arts, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, California, the Machida Museum of Graphic Arts in Tokyo, Japan, the Montgomery Gallery of Pomona College in Claremont, California and the Royal Museum of Antwerp in Belgium.
“I feel moved when sunlight touches an object in the afternoon and visualize the space around me. I walk out and wander around to observe shapes of shadows. I realize that shadows make spaces visible. I find myself in the spaces enjoying architecture delineated by sunlight. Buildings and their shadows are layered and blended together creating momentary beauty of colors and shapes. These scenes are temporary, and will change or disappear in the next moment. They are very precious because their occurrence is the unique combination of a place, sunlight, and the precise moment I happen upon the scene - like an eclipse.
My attachment to the ephemeral properties applies to the transience of old architectural sites. I find myself interacting with the momentary phase of the building, which also is transforming over the time and disappear eventually.
I can express my feelings best using the tones of black and white. The graphic nature of black and white allows me to follow the directions of lines and shapes and to describe architectural elements. In my prints and paintings, depth of black and openness of white meet and angular lines intersect to depict temporary nature of light, space, and architecture and myself assimilating to it.” - Toru Sugita.
